Hunting for a good dentist in Ipoh

Now that my family is settled in Ipoh, I need to locate services such as dental, facial, medical etc. here.

For paediatricians, I have tried Dr. Lim in Fair Park, Dr. David in Ipoh Specialist and Dr Tang in town. My children don't really take to Dr. Lim as he appears rather grouchy. Dr. David is thorough and caring, but he is extremely popular and there is always a long wait for him. Dr. Tang is now our regular paed.

My hunt for a good beautician is still ongoing.

As is the hunt for a good dentist. We still go back to KL for that. But just this week, my maid's molar tooth flared up again, causing her pain and discomfort. It definitely has to go. The nearest dentist to us is Kuan Dental Clinic in Ipoh Garden South. It is close by, and you don't have to wait long.

I guess the reason is because Kuan Dental is very pricey, and as for its quality, I am not very impressed. I was charged RM 90 for my maid's cleaning, scaling and antibiotics. The dentist on duty said that the molar was impacted and infected. It can only be removed once the infection clears. My maid's feedback to me was that the dentist (a middle aged lady) was quite rough and she felt quite a bit of pain during the scaling. Also, my maid said there was spray all over her face! Not to mention quite a lot of bleeding. Sounds like a bad job to me.

Scaling done by a good dentist should not feel too uncomfortable and there should be little bleeding. My dentist in Desa Sri Hartamas always cleans thoroughly yet gently.

As for surgical removal of the molar, Kuan Dental told me it would cost RM650. I checked with another dentist - Dr. Teh on Hume Street - and I was told it would cost RM350. That's a huge difference! But we haven't tried out Dr Teh yet, so the search continues......

  5. Hi Boon, well let's see:
    1. Kwan Dental in Ipoh Garden South - very busy clinic, clean and pleasant. Lady dentist there is alright, but they charge higher than average. As for cleaning and scaling teeth, the dentist is a little rough, causes some bleeding.
    2. Dr Teh - extremely busy clinic. Be prepared to wait! Dentist is very calm and friendly, and charges are very reasonable - maybe that's why so popular.
    3. Dr Lim at Choo Dental Surgery - very old clinic. Looks terrible and admin there is very bad. But Dr Lim is patient and communicates if you have ask him questions. Charges pretty reasonable too.

  8. Well, if you're going for Dr. Teh, you must check his profile first. You can ask him directly if he can treat your molar and what procedures he would use. Another thing, ask for advice from your neighbor. Does he provide good quality service? Or does he have the proper skill set to do the procedures? These are good things to consider before deciding to go for the procedure.

  9. It's a bit pricey, if you’re not satisfied with the outcome of the treatment. If that is the case, you just have to look for a different dentist who will provide good quality service at a fair price. I agree with Jane. You can ask for advice from your neighbor. This way, you will know which dentists in your neighborhood are most capable of solving your problem.

  10. Hi Jane and Savannah Moses, Dr Teh has proven to be quite skilled at extraction of molars. Very little inflamation and short recovery period after the extraction.
    Thanks for your comments!

    1. From what you've said, I think Dr. Teh has established his name as one of the credible dentists in your area. I wonder what kind of techniques he uses. Anyway, it's a good thing that you've found the best dentist for you.

  15. My 1 year old baby caught in bad flu and now coughing too. May i know which paediatric in ipoh give good medicine to cure for cough and cold. My son visited Dr David 1st and he used the tube to blow out his flu from his nose and my baby cried terribly . I guess using blowing tube is not advisable because it will damage the child's brain. Kindly share your tips ..kinda of worried because the baby lost appetite , and remedies in web to have vit c drinks but for chinese some said will caused more phlegm if taking orange ???

  16. Hi Tayton....sorry to hear that your baby is sick.

Dr David is a popular pediatric in Ipoh. You can also try Dr Tang on Jln Leong Sin Nam. It is important to get out the mucus from his nose as it makes it hard for baby to breathe. Pls also observe your child closely if he is coughing with phlegm. Too much phlegm build up in the chest for a young baby is not good.

As your baby is 1 yr old maybe you can reduce his milk or dilute the milk. From experience, I found that milk makes their cough worse.

As far Vit C it is important. If u don't like to give him fresh orange you can get baby liquid vitamin

  26. Hi Annie, wow that's a very expensive whitening job!

Real sorry I don't know any dentist who can do a good whitening job in Ipoh. My brother works in KL so I guess that doesn't help you either. In fact, I just use a whitening product that is shaped like your upper and lower rows of teeth, and you just bite into it, and hold it in your mouth for 15 mins or so. It does help so whiten a little.
